The Research Assistant will analyze taxonomically benthic algal samples from Shenandoah River, VA in a study of benthic cyanobacterial HABs. The position is primarily laboratory-based and responsible for quantitative sample laboratory processing and soft-bodied algae identification, enumeration, and data analysis as well as supporting pigment analysis of the samples.

Requirements:

● Experience with algae identifications;

● Knowledge of freshwater algal diversity with a focus on benthic non-diatom algae and cyanobacteria from streams;

● University-level phycology class or algal taxonomy class;

● Coursework related to plant taxonomy, aquatic ecology or limnology;

● Graduate thesis or undergraduate research projects in algal taxonomy, or ecology of benthic freshwater algae.

Desired skills:

● Ability to identify and document freshwater algae accurately;

● Experience in the use of light microscopy and digital microphotography of algal specimens;

● Good record-keeping skills.

The position is open without preference to B.S. and M.S. degree holders, minimum salary is $52,000 plus benefits and will be commensurate with experience. The position is a fixed-term, 12 month position with the possibility of renewal pending external funding, with a desired start date of August-September 2023 or January 2024.
