Platessa bahlsii has a very small central area on the raphe valve, smaller average size, and by having three or four rows of areolae in the striae. Platessa conspicua may also be confused with small specimens of various Planothidium species, which also possess relatively broad striae. It can be distinguished by its linear-elliptical valve outline, absence of terminal raphe fissures, and transverse central area on the raphe valve.
