Larger specimens of Staurosira construens var. binodis are similar in valve outline to P. robusta. However, the coarse arealae of P. robusta are distinct, in contrast to the areolae of Staurosira construens var. binodis, which are not resolvable in LM. Pseudostaurosira robusta can be distinguished from P. pseudoconstruens by its bi-undulate shape (see exceptions in the OBSERVATIONS section, however).
